RE: 2017/2018 Brony@Home vs Team AnandTech!
I was unaware of the fin density issue with a car rad. But I am planning to eventually build a wooden 'display case' / server rack with a car rad just to cool off the exhaust air before it returns to the room, and try to have a small geo-thermal setup buried in the yard to dissipate the heat/cool the water. In winter, I'd just cut the power to the water pump, to reclaim the heat instead.

I'm hyper sensitive to noise too, I can't sleep without it! ;)

Yeah! Stats are rolling in again! BUT THEY ARE REALLY LOW NUMBERS. This better just be due to all the piles and piles of work they've been storing. If we lost all those days of results.....I'm going to have to suppress a sniffle or two.

Looks like just EOC is a bit behind, so no lost work. Pinkiesmile

An impressive stat: At the next EOC update, both teams together will have produced 5,000,000,000 points this race! That's a really big number. ;)

I've always wanted to look into the feasibility of using a car radiator as a giant watercooling component in a computer, just so I could stick a single, larger fan on it. Unfortunately, the fin density isn't particularly favourable, so it's not as amazing as it sounds. Still...perhaps there is a high fin density car rad out there.

Quick search shows a 64*40*5cm rad to be about 150 USD. Could technically use one without a reservoir, given that there's generally enough space to top up extra fluid in car rads. Of course, there's still the problem of getting the right adapters for piping and such, but damn would it make for a unique build!

Just don't ever use car rad fans for cooling. Those things are LOUD! And use well over 100 watts for smaller models.

I've actually had that same thought before... something that might be worth a shot if you ever do try is an oil-cooler or power-steering cooler.  They should be cheaper, they would use smaller diameter tubing, and there are tons of variations to choose from.  That being said an aftermarket radiator should actually have a pretty decent fin-surface area considering the depth of the unit, and how thin and wide the actual cross-rad piping is.  They almost make the tubing across the radiator fins themselves.

Edit: Also worth noting you can get dual-pass radiators. Forcing all the coolant across the full width of the radiator twice would help a ton in a low-air-flow (in comparison to a moving vehicle and rad-fan) setup.

you can get copper car radiators no problem still... for example... https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sgt-cu1182/overview/ $107 and free shipping. Just make a grid of 140mm computer fans pulling air through it and you are good. Can get thicker/bigger ones too that would likely work better, but I can't imagine that not working very well. When I get my own house, I will be doing fun things like this.

A Canadian Super-Computing center uses thick custom radiators in the BACK door of the server racks, to keep the building cool. I think Linus goes into depth about that feature about 2/3rds into the video, but you can see how thick the doors are several times, throughout the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RqF8m65r8g

If you're gonna experiment with car radiators, why not go down to your local junk yard and pick up a bunch for cheap to try things out with? Then spend more on a fancy one later on

Because they are all aluminum, have glycol and other chemicals in the system that will be difficult to flush, probably even mineral deposits on the inside that will never come off.

Will you look at this, even though we fell behind 10m, we rose another rank and left Team Tekzilla in the dust.

Even higher if you're looking at PPD.
