BOINC General
Need one of these for anything not relating to a specific project. Also because I'm not sure if I myself have a problem.

I've got a laptop with a 1.8 Ghz core2duo running BOINC. The projects on it are:

WUProp
Quake-Catcher
Radioactive@Home
NFS@Home
ABC@Home

The laptop runs Linux.

I noticed that it runs projects only for a while, and then stops. The non intensive tasks from WUProp, Quake, and Radioactive still run, but when I checked processor usage after a few hours, I see that no processing power is in use, which is confirmed by the lack of heat from the exhaust.

This laptop runs hot, so at around 97 degrees, it throttles itself from 1.8 Ghz to 1.2, and then to 0.8, on a regular basis. This is the only thing I can think of which is causing this issue.

There should be logs I can check for this sort of stuff, but I'm not sure where to find it in Linux.

RE: BOINC General
How are you checking CPU usage? System monitors don't display CPU usage for other users. In this case, likely a 'BOINC' user. Using 'top' in a terminal would display everything.

As for the system logs, I've never really found them to be terribly helpful when I really needed them. I think the location varies based on distro, but with debian/ubuntu based distros I want to say it should just be in the menu > System Tools > System Log

I only ever use top for checking.

So BOINC itself doesn't make logs, or do they all just go into one place, regardless of the application?

Got an email today saying I'm the user of the day in Constellation@Home.

WTF is the user of the day? Can't be the user with the most points, since only CraptasticLaptop1 and my mother's laptop run the project. And if I am the one with the most points in a day, then C@H is going to have to wait a loooooong time.

Sticking another computer onto BOINC. This one is a dual core Athlon 4400+ running Lubuntu. So far I've got POGS and WUProp running, but it doesn't seem to like Leiden. Keeps giving me Computation Error almost immediately after initialising. Pity. Such easy points. I'll probably run eOn in its place instead.

User of the day is a vote-based system. People vote users with good profiles and good contributions to be user of the day.

With small projects it's more or less the admins picking whoever the fuck the random roulette of justice returned on. I think you two were because I made a single vote and no-one else did that day.

Is that so...

Docking@Home set to retire at the end of this month

Quote:With a heavy heart, we are announcing the retirement of the Docking@Home project. Unfortunately, we no longer have the resources to maintain the project. Starting on April 30, 2014 Docking@Home will no longer be distributing new jobs but will continue to collect results. On May 23, 2014 the server will stop accepting results as the project enters retirement.

...

Over the past 9 years we’ve had 98,512 Volunteers contribute computing power from 264,535 hosts. We have granted a total of 5,422,290,917 credits, which means our volunteers contributed roughly 159,398,584 Hours (18,196 years!) of computation. Back in Jan we made all of the result data public and we will keep that interface active. Thank you to everyone that made Docking@home a success over the years. It’s been fun! Please join us on the forums to share your best and worst story from the project.

Anyone know how to update BOINC on Linux? Doesn't look like apt-get update/upgrade works for it, and I've got some outdated versions on a few computers.

Also, nearly returned 300 WUs for WCG!

I recognize that menu button! Are you using Linux Mint or some other distro with cinnamon?

Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X, but if nothing new about it pops up soon, I might settle for 290 Vapor-X.

If it's dedicated to BOINC, you might want to check out this page to see which cards give the most performance per price unit. Generally not the strongest cards, but getting multiple cards worth a combined value of a top-end card would yield much more computing power, provided you have the room for it on your mobo. Folding and BOINCing applications arent affected by how fast the PCI-e lanes are going at in the same way that gaming is, either.

Quad 280(X)s beat the <beep> out of everything, but since gaming is my primary concern, BOINC gets second place and does majority of the work when I'm at work/asleep and/or not recording LoL/playing Planetside 2/playing Minecraft.
