July 2013 Folding@Home Competition
As of the 1st of July 2013 at 00:00 UTC, the competition has begun

Latecomers may still apply during the first week, but applicants past this point will only be allowed to in in the 'overall score' category

We're back again after 6 months with another competition, and boy do we have some awesome prizes again! We have not one, not two, but three video cards up for grabs, and the icing on the (cup)cake: Two plushies by the talented zuckerschnuti!

So, to all you new folks who are unfamiliar with how our competitions work: Download Folding@Home, pick a user name, add the team number (212997), obtain a passkey, and start folding. Simple as that! You can fiddle with other options if you want, ask us for help on optimising your output, or you can just leave it alone to do its thing.

How do you join? Just post in this thread with your intention to enter the competition, and I'll add you to our list of competitors. I monitor this forum quite often, along with my co-admin Sellyme, so we respond and add you no later than a few hours. Once you are on the list, you can begin folding immediately. This is encouraged, so that if you have any problems, we can help you fix them before the competition starts.

Please familiarise yourself with the information on this page, and pay particular attention to the rules at the bottom.

Once the competition begins, we take the initial scores of everyone, to compare with your score at the end of the competition. This is why you can start folding before the competition, as it won't make a difference (as far as the competition is concerned, that is...science still loves you!).

Your chances of winning will be determined by a number of factors:
  • How powerful your computer is
  • How long your computer stays on for
  • How many computers run under your name
Regarding the third point, I want to emphasize that you ARE allowed to use multiple computers under your name. However, you are NOT allowed to enter the competition under multiple names. We can easily see who tries to do so, and offenders will be disqualified and banned from future competitions.

The competition will last for 8 weeks. That is, exactly 56 days, and not two months. The competition will begin on the 1st of July at 00:00 UTC, and ends on the 26th of August at 00:00 UTC. Winners will be announced a few hours after the competition ends.

There are three categories in which winners will be placed in:
  • Overall points: 2 possible winners *
  • Point-based random draws: 6 possible winners
  • Purely random draws: 7 possible winners
* Winners in this category may not receive a video card. Those who win in this category likely already have powerful hardware, and we would prefer to give away our cards to those with lower-end hardware.

Overall points are self explanatory. Those with the highest scores are deemed the winners in this category. These scores are determined simply by subtracting the initial points from the final points, so that we can see only the points you have made during your 8 weeks.

Point-based random draws work by picking a random winner, but giving those with higher scores a higher chance of being picked. That way, everyone has a chance of winning, but those who put more effort into folding will still have better odds. This is determined on a logarithmic scale, so the playing field is evened out. To do this, a competitor receives 1 entry in the draw for every magnitude of 10, past 1000 points. For example, 1000 points will give you 1 entry. 10 000 points gives you 2 entries, 100 000 points gives you 3, and so on.

Purely random draws are also self explanatory. Everyone's names are put into an online randomiser, and winners are picked.

In order to have as many winners as possible, only one prize per person is allowed, so if, for example, you have won in overall points, you will not be included in either of the random draws. Or, if you have won a random prize, you may not win another random prize.

List of prizes:
  • 2x EVGA GTX 470 Superclocked ** (Fir3Chi3f, tiwake, enginemaniac)
  • 1x HD 7770 (B@H)
  • 2x 4 inch tall plushies *** (zuckerschnuti)
  • 3x brony@home posters (tiwake)
  • 1x Humble Bundle 8: Dear Esther, Capsized, Thomas Was Alone, Little Inferno, Awesomenauts, Hotline Miami, Proteus, Tiny and Big in Grandpa's Leftovers, English Country Tune, Intrusion 2, Oil Rush (Spazturtle)
  • 1x Nuclear Dawn (ShadowOfDeath)
  • 1x Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (ShadowOfDeath)
  • 1x Darksiders Franchise Pack (ShadowOfDeath)
  • 1x Far Cry 1 (flaxative)
  • 1x single pony (OC or otherwise) arting (GeminiShadows)
  • 1x $50 Amazon gift card (shadowbolt82/bronyracer)
** Used. Verified fully stable under 100% load (ie, folding). Clocks: 625 MHz core, 1250 MHz shader, 3402 MHz memory (1280 MB)
*** Winner can choose any character, including OCs, provided no more than two colours in mane/tail. Example plushie.

If you are chosen as a winner, and select a video card as your prize, be aware that you need to first check if your computer's motherboard and power supply unit (PSU) can support the card, either as a replacement to a slower card, replacement of onboard graphics (those without a proper video card), or as a second video card. If you are unsure whether your motherboard or PSU are compatible, post here, and we can provide instructions on what do to.

If your PSU is not strong enough, you run the risk of overloading and killing it, so be sure to check this!

OPTIMISATIONS

Want to get as many points as possible out of your system? Of course you do! If you're running a decent GPU (any ATI/Radeon GPU, or a NVIDIA GTX 460/550Ti/650 or higher), make sure you set client-type: advanced; in your Folding@Home Advanced Control. This will drastically increase your points per day!

Oh, and just an FYI, we're still scouting out more prizes, to be announced as the competition goes on!

Oh, and one last thing! If you want to triple your points output, open the F@H advanced control from the little icon in your taskbar, and set this:

Hhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......considering joining. If I did I'd grab myself a 1000W PSU and drop my two GTX 470s in my case for the duration of the competition, then send them off once it's over as the prizes. :P Of course, I'd have to take out my soundcard, but that's all good, I'm out of the house for two of those 8 weeks.

Well it's not very nice to give someone a GPU that hasn't been stress tested, is it! ;D
