I fold on 2 desktops, both AMD setups. 2 days ago, they became useless. My 6-core dropped from 6K ppd to 1400 and my 8-core dropped from 14k to 3k. They have been used less than usual, are set as SMP 5 and SMP 7 (respectively) and are not GPU folding. There have been no errors or anything, TPF just skyrocketed to ~40 min on both systems... what just happened?
Make sure you're not running AMD OverDrive, that could be overclocking the CPUs, making them hit their max temperature, and instigating thermal throttling.
Can't OC the 6-core system, and temps are normal in the 8-core.
Sure you didn't just get a bunch of crappy work units? what PRCG do you have?

That's kind of the point of thermal throttling. AMD OverDrive overclocks you, then you hit max tempterature, and thermal throttling underclocks you to a tenth of your original speed. My girlfriend's mother's laptop was running at 140MHz due to thermal throttling, even though BIOS read 2.1GHz.

Currently gnawing on a 7036. I've seen PPD change a fair amount, but nowhere near this much.

If the BIOS still reads normal, then how do I know if it is being throttled? Just pause FAH for an hour to cool and see if that fixes it?
Nope. Open up CPU-Z. It should tell you what your current speed is at.
I generally use the CPU monitor in Process Hacker 2, as that shows you your current clock speed and your BIOS clock speed, but CPU-Z works too.

Don't have any data on 7036s in my spreadsheet yet.
CPU-Z agrees that my clock speed is where it should be. Ajbemused
Then you aren't getting throttled.

Check your task manager. Is there anything hogging your CPU? I know that a few months back, I dropped in CPU PPD because the program that allows me to test this website's files locally was using an unusually high amount of CPU for reasons I still don't know to this day. Disabled it, and everything went back to normal.
Don't remember what WU it was, but I got one a couple weeks ago that dropped my i7 down to 8k PPD. It's usually around 25k so that was a pretty drastic drop in points.

Also, SMP 7 will cause some WU's to fail immediately, specifically the 10xxx WU's. I was running SMP 7 for a month or so with no problems until one day I found my client stopped with the message FAILED in red. Found out it received a WU that will not run with SMP 7 and failed enough times that it just shut down.
Yeah some of the older WU's don't work on a odd number of threads, I think the newer ones do but there are still a few old projects going.
If the WU is causing you problems then as a last resort dump it.

Every other running program combined takes 1% of my CPU, max.

SMP 7 on an i7 uses hyperthreading, though. I have 8 physical cores (4 caches, WTF AMD?). Not sure if that makes a difference, or I have just never run into a WU that doesn't like SMP 7.
I have tried SMP 5 and 6, but the ppd drop is linear with the core drop.

I usually run only SMP, but with my insane ppd drop, I'm now running SMP+GPU. SMP ppd is still the same, and GPU ppd stays the same whether it's running alone or together. I'm still only folding 5-8k per machine now, vs my 10-20k/machine last week.
And, with no changes on my end, both comps are back folding at full force. Derpytongue2
